Role Overview

A client of ours is seeking an experienced Backend Engineering Team Lead to oversee a team responsible for the development, enhancement, and maintenance of business-critical software solutions. This position combines people leadership with hands-on technical contribution. The successful candidate will guide a team of backend engineers, drive engineering excellence, support architectural decisions, and contribute to the delivery of scalable and reliable systems. The role requires close collaboration with product, architecture, and engineering stakeholders while fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and technical quality.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of backend software engineers
  • Participate in recruitment activities, onboarding, and team development initiatives
  • Conduct regular performance discussions, coaching sessions, and career development planning
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture focused on ownership and continuous improvement
  • Help team members overcome technical and organizational challenges
  • Establish and promote engineering standards, development practices, and code quality guidelines
  • Collaborate with architects and senior technical stakeholders on system design and technology decisions
  • Review code, provide technical feedback, and ensure maintainability across projects
  • Drive adoption of scalable architectures, testing practices, and modern development methodologies
  • Support technical decision-making across multiple projects and initiatives
  • Contribute directly to the design and implementation of backend services and platform components
  • Participate in the development of new products and strategic technology initiatives
  • Enhance existing systems through performance improvements, refactoring, and feature development
  • Analyze business and technical requirements to propose effective software solutions
  • Support production systems and troubleshoot complex technical issues when required
  • Plan and prioritize engineering activities in alignment with business objectives
  • Coordinate development efforts across multiple projects and teams
  • Track progress, identify risks, and remove delivery blockers
  • Work closely with Product Managers, QA teams, DevOps engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure successful delivery
  • Maintain technical documentation and contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading software engineering teams, including people management, mentoring, performance management, and technical leadership
  • Strong background in backend software development with at least 5 years of professional experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience building enterprise applications using Java and modern Spring technologies
  • Strong understanding of software architecture principles, design patterns, and SOLID practices
  • Experience designing and developing distributed systems and microservices-based solutions
  • Solid knowledge of relational database design, optimization, and data access strategies
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL, or similar database technologies
  • Strong understanding of asynchronous communication and integration patterns including REST APIs, messaging platforms, and event-driven architectures
  • Experience with containerized environments and modern deployment platforms
  • Practical knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and production monitoring solutions
  • Experience implementing automated testing strategies, code quality processes, and version control best practices
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Strong experience with modern Java versions and the Spring ecosystem
  • Expertise in backend application development, dependency management, persistence layers, and testing frameworks
  • Experience developing applications using modern .NET and C#
  • Familiarity with common ORM technologies and testing approaches within the Microsoft ecosystem
  • Ability to contribute to or review code across multiple backend technology stacks

Bonus / Nice to Have

  • Working knowledge of Python and/or Go
  • Experience working with cloud-native environments on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code and modern CI/CD practices
  • Experience with NoSQL and high-performance data platforms
  • Familiarity with caching strategies and technologies such as Redis
  • Exposure to observability platforms and distributed tracing solutions
  • Experience operating large-scale, high-availability systems
